The players of the French national team promised to finance human rights organizations.
Support for non-profit organizations dedicated to human rights issues will be provided through the Generation 2018 charity foundation, founded by the players of the national team after winning the world title four years ago.
Due to the turbulent situation around the upcoming World Cup, with this letter we want to confirm our commitment to respect human rights and rejection of any kind of discrimination.
We`ve been hearing warnings from NGOs and charities for weeks, and we`re mindful of them. Our passion should not be the cause of unhappiness for some people, says an open letter released on Tuesday.
The players also stated that they are going to Qatar to play football, but at the same time they are aware that football can influence awareness of human rights and environmental issues, and that everyone should do their part to fight for these values.
The letter was signed by the winners of the 2018 World Cup, who were the first to establish the Generation 2018 Fund, as well as by the players who are going to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.
Earlier, team captain Hugo Lloris said the team would issue a statement, insisting that he and his teammates are not indifferent to the issue of human rights in Qatar, in particular migrant workers and LGBT persons.
