Two-time Formula 1 champion Mika Hakkinen praised George Russell`s impressive victory at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.


Russell beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton to win an F1 race for the first time in his career, and also brought Mercedes its first victory of the season.


The wrestling this weekend was superb and George truly deserved the win with such a strong performance. He was the fastest Mercedes driver in Friday qualifying and then won Saturday`s sprint in impressive fashion. He had a perfect Grand Prix on Sunday, making a fantastic start, creating a lead and not letting the safety car periods shake his confidence. He had to perform under a lot of pressure - especially when Lewis Hamilton was 1. 5 seconds behind - but he controlled the gap perfectly.


This appears to be the first of many victories for George. Now he is at the right stage of his career: he is only 24, he is full of motivation. George spent three years getting his bearings in F1 in Williams` less-than-competitive car, and nearly won his debut race for Mercedes when Lewis missed out on the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain in 2020. "We had to wait until this weekend, but as soon as he was back in a fast car, he won the race, " Hakkinen said.
